Assurance

Why are you being asked about assurance?

What is assurance?

Assurance is a confirmation from an independent expert that the information you have shared is accurate and reliable. This helps build trust with your stakeholders. The expert providing this assurance is specially certified to do this kind of work.

If you’re a small or medium business, you may not be expected to have assurance. If you are a large corporate, either regulations or stakeholders are starting to expect you have this.

Chapter 10 of GHG Protocol’s Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard,

Assurance is the level of confidence that the inventory is complete, accurate, consistent, transparent, relevant, and without material misstatements.

💡
The real value of having your emissions data assured by third party assurance practitioners is gaining the insights on where to improve and enhance the quality of emissions data.

Why are you being asked about assurance?

Although it’s currently not mandatory, many organisations are getting their emissions data verified or assured by a third party as it helps to provide an additional rigour, robustness, and comfort over the emission numbers. This is also beneficial for communicating with customers, investors, and other stakeholders, as it helps to give that level of confidence over the reported emission numbers.

👌🏻
That’s okay if you haven’t had your emissions data assured, the important thing is to communicate this fact in your submission (for Q8-9)
